Ski wear buying guide

Ski clothing needs to keep snow out, keep warmth in, and let you move freely. Buying a matching ski jacket and trousers set is the simplest way to get both right, especially for a first trip.

Ski jacket and trousers sets

A set gives you a padded, hooded ski jacket and matching ski trousers in one go. The women's ski set comes with braces, which keep the trousers up and stop snow getting in when you fall, and the men's ski set comes in several colour combinations.

The layering system

  1. Base layer: thermal top and leggings that move sweat away from your skin. Avoid cotton.
  2. Mid layer: a fleece or light knit you can add or remove.
  3. Outer layer: your ski jacket and trousers, which block wind and snow.

Ski gloves

Cold, wet hands spoil more ski days than anything else. Choose insulated, waterproof gloves with long cuffs that go over your jacket sleeve. If you feel the cold, rechargeable heated ski gloves add warmth to your fingers, and the kids' heated ski gloves keep little hands warm in ski school. See our heated gloves guide.

Getting the fit right

  • Leave room for a base layer and mid layer under the jacket.
  • Sleeves should cover your wrists when your arms are stretched forward.
  • Trousers should sit over your ski boots without dragging on the ground.

Off the slopes

Warm, grippy boots make walking around icy resorts much safer. See our snow boots, and read our first ski trip packing list before you go.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear skiing for the first time?

A thermal base layer, a fleece mid layer, a waterproof insulated ski jacket and trousers, ski socks, waterproof gloves, goggles and a helmet.

Is it worth buying a ski set?

For most people, yes. A matching jacket and trousers set is easier to buy, usually better value and you'll reuse it for snow days at home.

Are heated ski gloves worth it?

If your hands get cold easily, yes. They add warmth to your fingers on chairlifts and long days on the slopes.

Can I wear normal winter clothes skiing?

Not really. Ordinary coats and jeans soak through when you fall in snow; ski clothing is waterproof, insulated and cut to move in.
